UK Student Visa Requirements 2026 Explained in Simple Terms
Applying for a UK Student visa in 2026 can feel complicated when you are choosing a university and preparing documents. The process becomes clearer when you understand the main requirements.
For most international students who want to study in the UK for more than six months, the Student visa is the route they need. It is for students aged 16 or over who have been offered a place on an eligible course by a licensed UK education provider.
The first requirement is your university offer. Before you can apply for a UK Student visa, you need to secure a place with a university or education provider licensed to sponsor international students. Once you have accepted your offer and met the conditions, the university can issue your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, known as a CAS.
Your CAS is central to the visa application. It is a digital reference confirming your course, provider, fees and study dates. Check every detail before applying, including your name, passport details, course title, tuition fees paid and course start date. Small errors can create delays.
The next requirement is your passport and supporting documents. Every student will need a passport or valid travel document and a CAS. Depending on your situation, you may also need proof of funds, English language evidence, academic documents, a TB test certificate, an ATAS certificate for some science or technology courses, and parental consent if you are under 18.
Financial evidence is one of the most important parts of the UK Student visa requirements in 2026. You usually need enough money to pay for one academic year of tuition fees, or the full course fee if the course is shorter. The tuition amount will appear on your CAS.
You may also need to show living costs. The current requirement is £1,529 per month for courses in London, or £1,171 per month for courses outside London, for up to nine months. This money usually needs to be held for at least 28 consecutive days, with the end of that period within 31 days of your application date.
Some students do not need to show financial evidence, for example if they have already lived in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months before applying. Still, understand the rule before assuming it does not apply.
You will also need to pay the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge. In 2026, the Student visa application fee is £558, whether applying from outside the UK or extending or switching from inside the UK. The healthcare surcharge for students is currently £776 per year, and the final amount depends on visa length.
Timing is another key requirement. If you apply from outside the UK, you can apply up to six months before your course starts. If you apply from inside the UK, you can usually apply up to three months before the course starts, and you must apply before your current visa expires. Your new course must normally start within 28 days of your current visa ending.
If you are applying from Pakistan, leave enough time for document checks, biometrics, visa processing and travel planning. If you are already in the UK and want to continue studying, your current visa dates and next course start date need to work together.
Many international students can work part-time during term time on a Student visa, but your exact conditions depend on your course, sponsor and visa. Check your eVisa and university rules before accepting work.
Dependants are more restricted than they used to be. In most cases, only government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months, or students on eligible postgraduate research courses, can bring dependants. Families should check this before planning.
The simplest way to think about the UK Student visa process is this: choose the right course, secure your offer, receive your CAS, prepare your funds, check your documents, apply on time and follow your visa conditions.
