Will UK Student Visa Rules Get Harder in 2027? Expert Outlook for International Students
If you are planning to study in the UK in 2027, you may already have seen headlines suggesting that UK Student visa rules are becoming much harder. There is some truth behind them, but the position is more nuanced.
As of August 2026, the UK has not announced the closure of the Student visa route or a general ban on international students. Genuine students can still apply to study at licensed UK universities if they meet the academic, financial, English language and immigration requirements.
What is changing is the environment around international student recruitment. From 2027, graduates will have less time on the Graduate visa after completing most degrees, while UK universities will face even tougher requirements for the students they sponsor.
For international students, particularly those applying from competitive overseas markets such as Pakistan, this makes choosing the right course, university and application strategy increasingly important.

The biggest confirmed 2027 change: a shorter Graduate visa
The most significant confirmed change takes effect on 1 January 2027. Eligible students applying for the Graduate visa on or before 31 December 2026 can currently receive two years of post-study permission after completing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. For applications made from 1 January 2027, that period reduces to 18 months. PhD and other doctoral graduates will continue to receive three years.
This does not change the Student visa itself, but it changes the value and timing of the post-study pathway. An international student completing a UK Master’s degree in 2027 will therefore have less time after graduation to find appropriate employment, build UK experience and, where eligible, move towards another immigration route such as Skilled Worker.
Course choice and employability become even more important as a result.
Universities are also facing tougher visa compliance rules
A second change may be less visible to students but could have an important effect on UK university applications in 2027. Universities that sponsor international students are assessed by UK Visas and Immigration through the Basic Compliance Assessment. Since June 2026, universities have faced stricter thresholds. Their Student visa refusal rate must remain below 5%, at least 95% of sponsored students who receive visas must enrol, and at least 85% must complete their courses.
From 1 June 2027, the required course completion rate increases again to 90%. A new Red-Amber-Green rating system is also being introduced, with university sponsor performance becoming more visible. Institutions performing poorly can face recruitment restrictions, action plans and ultimately the loss of their ability to sponsor international students.
What could this mean for applicants?
Universities have a powerful incentive to recruit students whom they believe are academically suitable, financially prepared, genuinely intending to study and likely to complete their course.
We therefore expect some universities to become more selective before issuing a CAS.
Students may experience more detailed document checks, closer assessment of academic progression, stronger financial scrutiny, credibility interviews or additional questions about why they have chosen a particular course. If you are concerned about this, we can help Check Your Options.
These are university risk-management decisions rather than a new blanket Student visa rule, but they can still affect the application experience.
Will it become harder for students from Pakistan?
Students from Pakistan remain an important part of the UK international education market, and ASFE’s research has shown continuing demand for UK university places from Pakistan. The tighter university compliance regime means applicants from Pakistan should focus on application quality rather than submitting large numbers of speculative applications.
Your academic history, course choice, funding and future plans should form a clear and credible story. This makes accurate university matching particularly valuable. Applying to an institution and course that genuinely suit your profile is increasingly preferable to simply applying wherever a place appears available.
What is not changing in January 2027?
The core Student visa requirements currently remain familiar. You still need an offer from a licensed student sponsor, enough money for your course and living costs, the required level of English and the appropriate supporting documents. The current Student visa application fee is £558. Students who need to demonstrate maintenance funds currently require £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months.
No new 2027 maintenance figures or Student visa fee increase have yet been officially announced, so students should be wary of websites presenting predicted amounts as confirmed rules.
The restrictions on bringing dependants are also not a new 2027 change. For courses beginning from January 2024, most taught postgraduate students can no longer bring dependants, with eligibility mainly retained for government-sponsored students and qualifying postgraduate research students.
What about the International Student Levy?
Another policy sometimes described as a 2027 change is actually later. The government has announced an International Student Levy of £925 per international student per year, payable by English higher education providers. It is currently planned to start in the 2028/29 academic year, not 2027. Students should therefore not confuse this future university levy with a new Student visa charge for 2027.
Is the UK still welcoming international students?
Yes, although the emphasis is increasingly on sustainable recruitment and students who are well suited to their courses. The UK Government’s 2026 International Education Strategy explicitly says it intends to maintain a globally competitive offer for international students and continue welcoming genuine students who want to benefit from UK higher education.
The Graduate route has been retained, albeit shortened, and UK universities continue to recruit internationally. The opportunity remains strong and the application environment is becoming more disciplined.
What should students planning UK study in 2027 do now?
The best response is not to panic or rush an application but start earlier.
Choose a course that fits your previous education and future career. Apply to universities that realistically match your academic profile. Prepare financial evidence carefully. Understand the CAS process. Check the current Student visa requirements when you are ready to apply rather than relying on old social media advice.
Students hoping to work in the UK after graduation should also investigate career outcomes before choosing a course. With an 18-month Graduate visa for most eligible graduates from January 2027, employability, work experience, networking and career preparation become more valuable.
