Clearing Explained for International Students: UK Universities 2026

If you want to study at a UK university in 2026 but do not currently have a confirmed place, Clearing could give you another opportunity.

UCAS Clearing is the system UK universities and colleges use to fill undergraduate course places that remain available after the main application cycle. International students can use Clearing in the same way as UK students, whether you are applying from Pakistan, the Middle East or elsewhere overseas.

For 2026, Clearing opened on 2 July and runs until 19 October. However, international students who need a UK Student visa should avoid treating October as a realistic target. You still need time for university checks, an offer, your CAS, visa application, travel and arrival before the university’s latest enrolment date. If you are looking for a UK university place now, speed matters, but making the right decision matters even more.

Who can use Clearing in 2026?

Clearing is not only for students who missed their grades. You can use Clearing if you applied after 30 June, did not receive any offers, failed to meet the conditions of an existing offer, decided you no longer want your current place, or did not submit a UCAS application earlier in the year. You may also use Clearing because your plans have changed and you now want a different course or university.

International students who already have their academic results can often begin looking before UK students receive theirs. Universities continually update available courses, with another major increase in vacancies around UK A-level results day, which was 13 August in 2026. This makes August one of the most important periods for UK Clearing applications.

How does Clearing actually work?

The process is simpler than many students expect. First, search the available UK university courses and identify options that match your qualifications, subject interests, budget and career goals.

Next, contact the university directly. During Clearing, universities may speak with students by telephone, email or online chat and can assess whether they are likely to offer you a place. Have your qualifications, English language results and visa information ready. International students may be asked for transcripts, certificates, passport information or proof of English language ability.

You can speak to several universities and receive more than one informal offer before making your decision.

Once you have chosen the course you genuinely want and the university has given you permission, you add it as your Clearing choice in UCAS Hub. You can only add one Clearing choice at a time, so do not add a course simply because somebody has offered you a place. Research it first.

Can you use Clearing if you never applied through UCAS?

Yes you can. For 2026, students applying directly through Clearing can create a UCAS application after 30 June even if they did not apply earlier in the year. You normally need to complete the application sections, including a personal statement and reference unless a university specifically tells you otherwise.

Once your application has been submitted and processed, you receive the information needed to discuss Clearing places with universities and eventually add your chosen course. UCAS has also introduced document upload for students applying directly through Clearing for 2026. This can allow international applicants to upload information such as international qualifications, passports and visa documents.

Should you accept the first university that offers you a place?

Usually the answer is, no. Clearing can create a sense of urgency, but an available place is only valuable if it is the right place.

Check the course modules, university location, tuition fees, accommodation, entry requirements, careers support and whether the course fits your academic background. If you want to build a career in data science, engineering, business, project management or healthcare, for example, look at what the course actually teaches rather than choosing by university name alone.

For international students, there is another important question: can the university complete its international admissions and CAS process within the available time? Ask before accepting.

What happens after you receive a Clearing offer?

Securing your university place is only the next stage of the journey. If you need a UK Student visa, your university must be a licensed student sponsor and issue you with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, known as a CAS.

Before issuing the CAS, the university may need to check your academic documents, English language evidence, financial position, immigration history and other information. Once you have your CAS, you can prepare and submit your Student visa application.

Students applying from outside the UK can apply for a Student visa up to six months before their course starts. GOV.UK says decisions are usually made within around three weeks after the application and identity requirements have been completed, although processing times can vary.

A university place through Clearing therefore does not mean you should delay your visa preparation.

What should international students using Clearing check?

Students applying from outside of the UK should be particularly careful about university suitability, financial evidence and visa timing. Do not assume every university with a Clearing vacancy will necessarily be the right option for your profile.

Prepare your academic documents, passport, English language evidence and funding information before contacting universities. Check whether the institution is actively accepting applicants with your qualifications and whether there is sufficient time to complete its CAS process.

Your Student visa financial evidence may also need to satisfy the 28-day funds rule, so this should already be part of your planning rather than something you begin after receiving an offer.

What about scholarships and accommodation?

Changing university through Clearing can affect other arrangements. A scholarship awarded by one university will not normally transfer automatically to another institution. If you have external sponsorship, check whether your sponsor will approve the new university and course.

Accommodation also becomes more urgent because students entering through Clearing are applying later than many classmates. Ask about university halls and private accommodation as soon as you begin discussing a place.
