For international students planning to study in the UK in 2027, finding an affordable university can make a significant difference to the total cost of your degree.
Tuition fees vary widely between UK universities. Where you live can matter almost as much. A university with slightly higher fees in a lower-cost city may ultimately be more affordable than a cheaper course in London once accommodation, transport and everyday living costs are included.
For that reason, students searching for the cheapest UK universities for international students in 2027 should look at the complete cost of study rather than one headline tuition figure. It is also important to use current information. As of September 2026, some UK universities have already published their 2027/28 international tuition fees, while others still show 2026/27 rates. Fees can also vary considerably between courses.
Here are some of the more affordable options worth exploring.
University College Birmingham
University College Birmingham currently stands out as one of the clearest lower-cost choices with confirmed 2027/28 international fees. Its Band 1 undergraduate courses will cost £17,000 per year for new international students in 2027/28. Band 1 postgraduate courses are £18,000, and the MBA is also £18,000.
Some specialist programmes sit in higher fee bands, so students need to check the individual course rather than assume every degree costs the same. Birmingham can also offer an important cost advantage over London. It is one of the UK’s largest student cities, with extensive transport, international communities and a broad employment base, while typical living costs can be lower than in the capital.
For international students looking for affordable UK university fees alongside big-city life, University College Birmingham deserves serious consideration.
Kingston University London
Students who specifically want to study in London may find Kingston more affordable than some central London universities. For 2027/28 entry, many classroom-based undergraduate courses at Kingston are currently listed at £19,800 for the first year. Social sciences, economics and law are £20,500, while specialist subjects such as art, pharmacy and aerospace engineering cost more.
Kingston provides access to London while offering a different environment from studying in the centre of the city. However, students need to factor in London living costs. The current Student visa maintenance requirement for London is £1,529 per month for up to nine months, compared with £1,171 outside London.
A lower London tuition fee therefore does not automatically make Kingston cheaper overall than studying elsewhere in the UK.
University of Essex
The University of Essex has published international undergraduate fees for 2027/28 ranging from £22,575 to £33,350 depending on the subject. Its lowest fee band includes subjects in areas such as language, literature, sociology, criminology, philosophy and some health and social care provision.
Business, law, economics and mathematics currently sit at £23,750, while laboratory, computing and specialist courses cost more.
Essex may be useful for students who want access to the South East of England without living in London itself. Its main Colchester campus is outside London for Student visa maintenance purposes, which can lower the amount students need to budget for living costs.
The University of Chester
Chester is another university international students interested in lower tuition fees should watch closely. Its latest published international rates for 2026/27 are £14,950 per year for most undergraduate degrees and £15,500 for many postgraduate courses, with an MBA currently listed at £15,700.
The university has not yet published a general 2027/28 international fee table, so these figures should not be treated as confirmed 2027 prices. They do, however, show why Chester belongs on a 2027 affordability shortlist while students wait for the new rates.
Chester also automatically considers eligible international applicants for international and merit-based scholarships, which can reduce the headline tuition fee further.
University of Suffolk
The University of Suffolk is another option to monitor for 2027. Its current 2026/27 international undergraduate fees range from £15,900 to £18,870, while postgraduate taught fees range from £16,020 to £18,900.
The main campus is in Ipswich, around an hour from London and Cambridge, providing students with access to the South East while avoiding London accommodation costs. For students comparing affordable UK universities, this combination of tuition fees and location can be important.
Other universities may become competitive as 2027 fees appear
Not every UK university has published international tuition fees for September 2027 yet.
Universities including Teesside and the University of Greater Manchester currently show international undergraduate fees around £17,000 to £17,500 for 2026/27 on relevant courses, but students should wait for their confirmed 2027 fee information before comparing them directly with universities whose new rates are already published.
How much should you budget for living costs?
Tuition is only one part of the cost of studying in the UK. Current British Council guidance suggests that international students without dependants should allow approximately £1,300 to £1,400 per month for living costs in London and around £900 to £1,300 per month elsewhere in the UK.
Accommodation is usually the largest cost. The British Council currently estimates an average room in student halls at around £848 per month in London compared with £664 elsewhere in the UK. A room in private shared accommodation averages around £750 in London and £554 outside London, before bills.
Food, transport, mobile phone costs, clothes, entertainment and travel also need to be included.
This is why a university in Birmingham, Chester, Ipswich, Colchester or another regional city can sometimes provide better overall value than a London institution, even where the difference in tuition fees is relatively small.
Remember the Student visa financial requirement
Your personal budget and the amount required for a UK Student visa are related, but they are not the same thing. Under the current rules, students who need to demonstrate maintenance funds must show £1,529 per month for London or £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months.
That means a maximum current maintenance requirement of £13,761 for London or £10,539 outside London, in addition to outstanding course fees shown on your CAS. These figures may change before some students apply during 2027, so always check GOV.UK at the time of your visa application.
Look at scholarships before deciding what is affordable
Headline tuition fees do not always tell you what you will actually pay. Universities may offer international scholarships, merit awards, country-specific funding, early-payment discounts or tuition reductions.
A £20,000 course with a £4,000 scholarship could ultimately cost less than a university advertising a £17,000 fee with no funding available. Students should therefore compare the net tuition cost after realistic scholarships, rather than ranking universities purely by published fees.
Choosing value, not simply the lowest price
The cheapest UK university is not automatically the best-value university for you. Your course should fit your academic background and future career. Check entry requirements, course modules, careers support, accreditation, university facilities and location alongside fees. A lower-cost course becomes poor value if it does not support the outcome you want. The strongest decision combines affordability with academic suitability.
