UK Top-Up Degree Options for HND and Diploma Students: 2027 Entry Guide
If you already hold an HND, Foundation Degree, associate degree or another recognised higher education diploma, you may not need to start a UK Bachelor’s degree from the beginning. A UK top-up degree can allow eligible students to enter the final stage of undergraduate study and convert an existing Level 5 qualification into a full UK honours degree, often in just one year of full-time study.
For international students planning UK study in 2027, this can be an attractive route because it builds on education you have already completed, reduces the time required to gain a Bachelor’s degree and can create a pathway towards postgraduate study and future career opportunities. The key is establishing whether your existing qualification is genuinely suitable for direct entry.
What is a UK top-up degree?
A top-up degree is normally the final year of a UK Bachelor’s honours programme. A standard undergraduate honours degree in England is usually worth 360 UK credits. Students joining a one-year Level 6 top-up course will commonly already have the equivalent of 240 credits from the first two years of higher education.
Completing the remaining 120 credits can lead to a full BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons), depending on the course. This makes top-up study particularly relevant for students with a Higher National Diploma, commonly known as an HND, a Foundation Degree, or equivalent Level 5 study completed in the UK or overseas. Universities assess qualifications individually, so having a document described as a “diploma” does not automatically guarantee final-year entry.
Your subject, academic level, credits and grades all matter.
Can international HND students apply for a top-up degree in 2027?
Yes. Several UK universities already advertise 2027 top-up degree entry for international students. UWE Bristol’s 2027 BA (Hons) Business and Management Top Up, for example, is a one-year full-time course starting in either September or January. Applicants would normally hold an HND, Foundation Degree or equivalent qualification, or have completed the equivalent of 240 UK credits in a related subject.
UWE also offers a 2027 Business Management with Accounting and Finance Top Up for students whose previous Level 5 study is in an appropriate accounting and finance discipline. This illustrates an important principle: your previous subject normally needs to connect with the top-up degree you want to study.
An HND in Business may provide a route into Business Management or International Business. An HND in Computing may support entry into a relevant computing top-up course. A hospitality qualification may lead towards hospitality or tourism management. The closer the academic match, the stronger the potential route.
What top-up subjects are available?
Business is one of the widest areas for UK top-up degree study. Current 2027 courses include Business and Management, International Business Management, Business Management with Accounting and Finance, Business Management and Marketing, and related specialist routes.
The University of Chichester has a one-year Business and Management International Route Level 6 Top-Up specifically designed for international students holding a Level 5 equivalent such as an HND or associate degree.
The University of East London currently lists International Business Management Top-Up for September 2027, while the University of Hertfordshire has a 2027 International Business Management Top-Up route for appropriately qualified students.
Computing is another important area.
Chichester’s 2027 Computing for Business International Route Level 6 Top-Up is designed for international students with an HND, associate degree or equivalent Level 5 qualification in computing, computing for business or information technology.
Students should distinguish carefully between courses that top an HND up to a Bachelor’s degree and courses that top an HNC or Level 4 qualification up to HND level. They are not the same qualification.
Hospitality and tourism students also have options. Middlesex University currently offers a one-year International Hospitality and Tourism Management BSc (Hons) Top-Up for September 2027, requiring the equivalent of 240 undergraduate credits for final-year entry.
The range means there can be good opportunities, but the right course depends on what you have already studied.
What if you have a diploma rather than an HND?
This is where students should avoid making assumptions. An HND is a recognised Level 5 qualification in the UK. An overseas diploma may be academically equivalent, but the university needs to assess it. Universities may consider the awarding institution, level of study, subjects completed, credits, grades and duration of the qualification. Some 2027 top-up courses explicitly accept an “equivalent qualification”. Others provide more detailed requirements.
A student with an associate degree or two completed years of a Bachelor’s degree may therefore qualify for final-year entry in some circumstances, even without holding a qualification called an HND. The sensible approach is to provide your transcript and qualification details for assessment before assuming you need either a one-year top-up or a complete three-year degree.
Will you need IELTS?
International students need to meet the university’s English language requirements. Current 2027 examples show IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5 as a common requirement for some top-up courses, although universities can accept other recognised evidence and requirements vary by institution. For degree-level Student visa study, the required English standard is normally equivalent to CEFR level B2. Higher education providers can assess English themselves where the immigration rules permit.
Check the specific course rather than assuming every UK university uses the same English test or score.
How long does a top-up degree take?
A Level 6 top-up degree is commonly one academic year full-time. That is one of its main attractions. A student who has already completed two years of relevant higher education may be able to earn a UK honours degree without repeating learning they have already completed. Some universities offer September entry, while selected programmes also offer January starts.
UWE Bristol’s Business and Management Top Up currently lists both September and January for 2027/28, giving eligible international students more flexibility around timing.
Can a top-up degree support a UK Student visa?
A full-time Bachelor’s top-up programme is normally degree-level study at RQF Level 6. Under the Student route, eligible international students can study a full-time degree-level course with a licensed student sponsor. Once you have an unconditional offer and the university is ready to sponsor you, it can issue the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies required for the visa application.
Students applying from overseas are not subject to the Student route’s academic progression test in the same way as students extending permission from inside the UK.
For students already studying in the UK, moving from a completed Level 5 course to a Level 6 Bachelor’s top-up would represent study at a higher academic level, although your university and immigration circumstances still need to be checked individually.
Can you progress to a Master’s degree afterwards?
Yes, this is one of the important attractions of completing a top-up degree. Once you successfully complete the programme, you hold a UK Bachelor’s honours degree rather than simply an HND or diploma. That may allow you to apply for relevant UK Master’s courses, subject to the postgraduate programme’s entry requirements and your final degree result.
A business top-up graduate, for example, might later consider MSc Management, International Business, Marketing, Finance or Project Management. A computing graduate may explore Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence or Cyber Security where entry requirements are met.
A top-up degree can therefore be viewed as a bridge between previous Level 5 study and postgraduate education.
What should you check before choosing a course?
The most important question is whether the university will recognise your existing qualification for the particular top-up route. Then look at the course content, tuition fees, city and living costs, English requirements, start date, careers support and postgraduate progression opportunities. Do not choose a course simply because it promises “one year to a UK degree”. The academic match needs to be right.
You should also confirm whether the qualification awarded after successful completion is the full BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) you expect and whether the university itself is a licensed Student sponsor if you require a visa.
